(in)somnia, a sudden daydream as if sleep overtakes us or no longer wants to catch us... Like an “anthropo(s)cene”, listening attentively to the changing soundscapes. A musical wake-up call: the unexpected silent cry of a cymbal to preserve the layered, biodiverse sounding ecology for future generations of all living species.

One day, two consecutive studio improvisations with (be) prepared percussion, vibraphone and marimba suddenly coincide, slide over each other, reinforce each other, move their sounds back and forth, denying the coincidence synthesis of melodies and initial rhythms in dialogue with the environment as a diverse whole, an ecological set of layered sounds.

It’s the start of six 20 min. sound journeys as dreamscapes of sonic (un)realities that will become sonic heritage sooner or later because common sounds will change or disappear. Like our surrounding soundscapes are changing every moment, every year, as do the ways we hear and listen. The changes also depend on our personal “multi-sensorial hearing perspectives”, our moods, our attention, our age, our (sonic) experiences and knowledge, our cultural-, aural-, sensory- and neuro diversity.

How much controle do we (want to) have when hearing and listening to this ever changing (un)musical soundscapes surrounding us, as we are part of it as performers, connected with many other (un)human creatures, animals, nature, tactile materials, machines, etc.?

Maybe (in)somnia can calm us down and bring us a state of trance-sitional listening, touched by proximity, ASMR, or raising our attention, bringing us new awareness, new inner (sensorial hearing) perspectives, new heard connections that stimulate a creative and adaptive listening?
